Number not eligible for the WhatsApp Business API?
When Meta refuses a number during setup, it's usually one of a handful of reasons. Most have a quick fix; a few need a different number.
Reasons and fixes
It's on the WhatsApp app
Use WhatsApp coexistence to keep the app and add the API, or delete the account from the app before registering.
The code never arrives
Make sure the number can receive SMS or calls. For landlines choose the voice call option.
Another provider has it
Turn off two-step verification with the old provider, then migrate the number.
It was restricted
Numbers banned for policy reasons can't be registered. Appeal through WhatsApp support or use another number.
Before you try again
- Use a number you own and can receive calls on
- Remove two-step verification from the old setup
- Back up chats you want to keep
- Have access to your Meta Business portfolio
- Check the display name follows Meta's rules
- Keep the number active afterwards
Questions, answered.
Can I use my personal number?
You can, but a dedicated business number keeps your personal chats separate and avoids losing access if you change phones.
What is WhatsApp coexistence?
It lets one number work on both the WhatsApp Business app and the API. See our blog post on coexistence.
