Utility vs marketing

Utility or marketing? How WhatsApp templates are categorized

The category decides the price you pay per message and whether Meta limits delivery. The rule of thumb: utility is about something the customer already did; marketing tries to get them to do something new.

Utility: order, shipping and account updates
Marketing: offers, reminders, announcements
Marketing costs more per message
Meta can reclassify your template

Why it matters

Meta prices messages by category and by the customer's country. Marketing messages are the most expensive, and they're subject to per-user delivery limits that show up as error 131049.

Utility messages sent while a customer service window is open are free. That's why order confirmations and shipping updates are best kept as clean utility templates.

Questions, answered.

Can I put a small promo line in a utility template?

No. Any promotional content can get the template reclassified as marketing.

Does Vrobo charge differently by category?

No. Vrobo adds no markup. You pay Meta's rate for each category directly.
